The salt mines of Maras, situated in the hills above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, consist of thousands of terraces built to trap and evaporate the salt from a nearby saltwater spring. Rich in minerals, salt has been mined in Maras since the pre-Inca period, and salt mining continues to be important for the local economy.
